Voices & Lyrics: Celebrating the Musicals | Shakespeare North Playhouse, Prescot

Created by James Cave and with musical direction from Sam Coates, this show is a true testament to the power of musical theatre. Combining some of the most well-known songs with the odd B-side, I defy you to leave this show without the yearning to explore the cast recording of a show you’re not familiar with or without belting one of the classics.

Cave comperes the show with a self-proclaimed nervous yet charming chaos that keeps the audience on his side throughout. During a setlist which, on this occasion at Prescot’s Shakespeare North Playhouse, predominantly consists of ballads; it showcases the extraordinary voices of the ensemble, but starts to lessen in punch as the evening goes by. This is also the case with having so many showstoppers at the end of Act 2, not leaving much time for the audience to take a beat. Equally, more duets and/or group numbers would change up the dynamic whilst indulging the audience in more of the stunning harmonies too lightly sprinkled throughout.

It would be impossible to choose any standouts from the extremely talented cast as each holds their own- irrespective of their credentials – though I implore you never to remove Kiss the Air.

With a magnificent cast of powerful voices and singing some of the most beautiful lyrics in musical theatre, Voices & Lyrics: Celebrating the Musicals is a vocally unforgettable night, showcasing the best of musical theatre.
