Magic & Sex | The Kings Arms, Salford

Almost a year ago, we were lucky enough to see Kathryn Haywood bring her one-woman-show, Yoga & Sex… For Women (Over 40) to Manchester before heading to Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival. The play packed such a punch, particularly with Haywood’s comedic performance, that she was named our blog’s ‘Performer of the Year’ in a play, 2024.

In the five-star review, I yearned to see Haywood bring her Aussie character, Kath, to life in different scenarios due to her hilarious, and sometimes, heartbreaking characterisation. Now a year on, cue Magic & Sex, again written and performed by Haywood with direction from Dan Mersh.

Here Kath is putting on a magic show, with a little bit of sex thrown in, and once again leaves the audience feeling safe in her hands- even when things don’t always go to plan. Haywood shows her bravery and self-confidence to not only perform magic (whilst discussing sex) but also solo on stage during one of the hottest days of the year. And although she has nowhere to disappear to (though she may try), she once again manages to bring the WOW factor in her performance, particularly shining during her crowd work and signature quick-witted one-liners – look out for a dance break too; hilarious.

As a fan of Haywood, it would be easy to describe this as a perfect fringe show as it has both humour and heart and is thoroughly entertaining. However, for those unaware of Kath the yoga instructor, there lacks a solid backstory which could cause a slight air of confusion. The naturalism and authenticity of Yoga & Sex… is what made the piece so memorable, and, with a little preening, Magic & Sex could easily be the second hit to be pulled out of her hat.

During an interview, Haywood describes the show as a burger with many different elements- some unexpected- but ultimately satisfying in the end: and it’s safe to say, I’d certainly order it again.
