Mergaliyev’s Swan Lake | Opera House, Manchester

Founded in 2023, Mergaliyev Classical Ballet once again returns to Manchester-following their successful debut in the city in 2024- with their interpretation of ‘Swan Lake’- set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless score. In a time when this particular ballet has been interpreted in abundance, does a classic rendition still quench the theatrical thirsts of a theatregoer in 2025?

The story remains unaltered and will especially please those of purist nature. Prince Siegfried falls madly in love with Odette- Queen of Swans. Falling foul to their persuasive ways, he is coerced into betraying her by the evil von Rothbart and his daughter, Odile. The rest, as they say, is history.

There’s a reason why patrons flock to witness the definitive spectacle that is ‘Swan Lake’. The thrill of a troupe of classical ballet dancers performing with such athleticism is a true sight to behold. In this production, Nilay Tahiroğlu is a stunning Odette. Gorgeously fluid, Tahiroğlu exquisitely floats across the stage: majestically poised and exuding elegance. Supported by male principal, Cristo Vivancos, the pair share a tangible connection as they conduct the stage with startling strength in their convictions. Tinged with melodrama- yes, yet they deliver Artistic Directors’ Yassaui and Sophie Mergaliyev vision with real class and discipline. As part of the Pas de trois, Aaron Lind’s dedication to his craft is clear and spotlights him as one of the stand-out performers on stage.

At times, though, it feels as though some elements of this production are a duck out of water. Tchaikovsky’s score, with orchestra conducted by Guntars Bernats, naturally soars- but falls somewhat flat in parts- lacking the gusto one would come to expect from swelling orchestrations which hold such iconic status. Some performances slip behind the music and the stage lacks the strong shaping needed from the ensemble to bolster the performances of the principals. A hesitancy lingers within their lines, lacking the finesse of their peers.

As a seedling company, it’s clear to see that Mergaliyev Classical Ballet is in a unique position, whereby they can build, grow and polish. Where the stars shine, they shine brightly. Dance is universal; it is celebrated in every country for all to enjoy and enjoyment wasn’t completely vacant in the theatre tonight, it just wasn’t there in abundance. Though there may be no fresh ground being broken here, it’s evident that there remains a space for the classics to be celebrated and preserved- though a little elevation can only ever be a good thing.

The Mergaliyev Classical Ballet continue their run at the Opera House this weekend with further performances of Swan Lake, as well as their interpretation of The Nutcracker. Details and booking can be found here.
