A Christmas Carol: The Musical | The Lowry, Salford

The Hope Mill Theatre’s A Christmas Carol: The Musical is a heart-warming masterpiece, bringing joy and wonder to the festive season at The Lowry’s Quays Theatre in Salford. Running from December 6th 2024, to January 5th 2025, it’s a celebration of everything that makes the holidays magical. This version takes Charles Dickens’ enduring story of redemption, gender-swaps it and infuses it with the glorious magic of Broadway. Originally presented annually at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, from 1994 to 2003, and with music by the legendary Alan Menken and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, it’s mind-boggling that it’s taken this long for a fully-staged professional production to reach UK shores.

It was worth the wait.

At the heart of the production is Claire Moore as ‘Evelina’ Scrooge, who delivers a powerful performance from the very first “Bah! Humbug!”. Tender glimmers peek out from beneath her nightcap early on in what is a uniquely fresh yet timeless portrayal of arguably one of the most prolific characters in literature. She’s joined by an outstanding cast, with James Hume as the exuberant Ghost of Christmas Present, Mari McGinlay as the ethereal Ghost of Christmas Past and Josie Benson on scene-stealing form as the effervescent Mrs Fezziwig (and the Ghost of Christmas Future). The entire cast bring exquisite vocals and talent to the stage, most surprising, however, is the joy that are the talented junior cast members who frankly make the prospect of musical theatre yet to come so incredibly exciting! (Huge props to Marnie Fletcher whose vocals are jaw-droppingly sublime.)

The staging is a feast for the senses. Lighting Design from Alex Musgrave weaves magic into every element, which works in harmony with Andrew Exeter’s fluid set that shifts seamlessly between Victorian London and the spectral realms, whilst literally encased in the pages of the original story. Gorgeous period costumes from Lorraine Parry transport us back to the Dickensian era whilst allowing performers room to celebrate George Lyons’ playfully dynamic choreography; capturing the essence of both the hustle of the city streets and the haunting frenzy of Scrooge’s harrowing journey. It’s not just a story unfolding on stage—it’s a festive experience that envelops you whole-heartedly in its world.

What makes this production truly special is the kindness at its core. Beyond directing team Joseph Houston and William Whelton’s outstanding spectacle is a profound message of generosity and community- embodied by the Hope Mill Theatre’s ‘First Curtain’ Scheme. This initiative provides free tickets to young people across Greater Manchester, many experiencing theatre for the first time; a reminder that art isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about bringing people together and opening doors to a world of possibilities for those who may never had had such opportunities before.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical is beyond a simple a retelling of Dickens’ classic story; it reinstates what the season is about—kindness, love, and hope. With its soaring music, stunning visuals, and heartfelt performances, this production isn’t just a highlight of the festive calendar; it’s a gift to everyone who sees it- truly the festive event of the season. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the tale or discovering it anew, it promises an unforgettable journey into the spirit of Christmas- and I can only hope that it is but the beginning for this glorious production.
