& Juliet is an electrifying musical that reimagines the story of Romeo and Juliet, giving it a fresh, modern makeover bursting with infectious energy, humour, and depth. This production boldly poses the question: what if Juliet’s life didn’t end with Romeo? The answer is an inspiring, joy-filled adventure that celebrates resilience, self-discovery, and the power of choice. Audiences are brought along for the ride as Anne Hathaway (no, not that one) and William Shakespeare themselves engage in a playful tug-of-war to reimagine Juliet’s story.

The musical score is nothing short of a masterclass, featuring an array of chart-topping hits from the legendary Max Martin, who has produced some of the most memorable pop songs of the last few decades. Bill Sherman’s musical supervision and orchestration, along with added arrangements by Dominic Fallacaro, bring these songs to life with precision and vibrance. Each track is woven seamlessly into the story, from emotionally resonant ballads to high-energy anthems- each like you’ve never heard them before. Jennifer Weber’s choreography takes it to the next level, creating visually dynamic and technically demanding sequences that are flawlessly executed with vivacity. This alongside the delightful pairing of Shakespearean influence with pop songs from artists like Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys is truly inspired.

The cast is more than up to the challenge of such a dynamic production. X Factor star Matt Cardle steps into the role of William Shakespeare, blending charisma with a compelling stage presence. Gerardine Sacdalan’s portrayal of Juliet is equally memorable; she brings a sweetness and naïveté that feels true to the original character, while also evolving her into a person empowered by her choices. Juliet’s journey from innocence to determination culminates in a stunning finale that’s pure musical theatre gold. Stepping into the spotlight, Kyle Cox comes into his own as the harpsicord enthusiast and destined to be betrothed, François- treating us to many a glorious scene-stealing moment, whilst Sandra Marvin’s turn as Angelique steams ahead with powerhouse vocals and a chemistry with TV’s Ranj Singh that is electric.  It’s Lara Denning’s portrayal of Anne Hathaway, however, that truly steals the show. With her impeccable comedic timing, flawless vocals, and stage presence in abundance, Denning creates a version of Hathaway that is utterly endearing and unforgettable. Her performance of Céline Dion’s “That’s The Way It Is” is not only a show-stopping highlight, but perhaps one of modern musical theatre’s most momentous occasions.

Visually, & Juliet is equally impressive. Soutra Gilmour’s innovative set design and Andrzej Goulding’s video work merge seamlessly, creating backdrops that shift fluidly from one setting to the next, enhancing the story’s coherence and adding dynamic visual interest. It complements the narrative’s twists and turns, giving audiences a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. Paloma Young’s costume designs are another standout, blending contemporary and Elizabethan styles to capture the production’s unique mix of old and new; a fusion to mirror Juliet’s journey as she navigates a world where her fate is no longer bound by tradition. The icing on the cake happens when Howard Hudson’s lighting design is added to the mix; enriching the theatre with stadium-style lighting that encapsulates the entire venue. It truly lives and breathes a life of its own.

David West Read’s book is a masterwork of wit and insight, filled with snappy dialogue that feels modern yet respectful to the Shakespearean roots of the story. His writing carefully balances humour and depth, exploring themes of self-empowerment and female agency in a way that feels refreshing and relevant. Luke Sheppard’s direction is thoughtful and skilled. Unafraid to adapt and enhance the acclaimed original, he weaves together the musical’s varied elements to create a seamless and resonant experience.

Since its debut in Manchester in 2019, & Juliet has changed the expectations of what a jukebox musical can achieve, and now, on its inaugural UK tour, it retains all the qualities that make it a top-tier show, remaining a testament to the transformative power of music, storytelling, and- to quote a certain Romeo- ‘It’s super dope!’
